As part of the 15-step process for making our toy cars from scrap wood, each car needs to be lovingly checked for rough edges and slivers. We need groups or individuals to take the cars and sand and oil them and return them for the next part of the process.
It takes 10 hours for one person, or 1 hour for 15 to 20 people to sand and oil a box of 100 cars. You check them out from us, (there might be a wait so claim yours as soon as you can,) and then do the super fun project with your group of amazing friends and bring them back!
We are at the shop for pick up and return on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.
Please don't keep them for more than a week as that slows down the next step in the process.
You'll need 15 to 20 palm size pieces of 100 or 120 grit sandpaper per box of 100 cars. A pencil or dowl with sandpaper wrapped around does a great job of sanding the window hole.
You'll need one 1" paint brush for every 2 people doing the project. One person sands while one oils and then switch.
We'll provide the oil. You'll need a bowl to pour it into for dipping the paint brushes.
We suggest you set up three tables per about 20 participants. The first table will have the sandpaper and the boxes of cars. The second table will have bowls with the oil in them and the paint brushes. The third table will have cardboard on it.
Have your volunteers grab two cars and go to the sanding table first. Sand all the edges and inside the window hole really well. Make the whole car smooth! We don't want to give anyone who plays with the finished car a sliver!
Then leave the sandpaper and take their two cars to the oiling table. Cover the car inside and out all over with lots and lots of oil. It should take the whole bottle if each car is getting enough. Don't forget the edges and in the hole. This is not a lacquer or a stain to cover the outside of the toy. It's oil that needs to soak into the center of the car so be liberal.
Let them rest on the third table while they go get two more cars and go through the process again.
It will take 4 hours or so for the cars to completely soak in the oil. Please don't wipe it off. They can be put back in the box after about an hour to finish drying. It's fine if they're still wet and touch each other, it will all soak in.
We like to have them returned within 7 to 10 days so they can continue on in their process of becoming a great toy. Please do not take them and keep them for several weeks.
PLEASE ONLY TAKE THEM THE WEEK YOU'LL BE DOING YOUR PROJECT.

Each car costs us about $2 to make. We don't require a donation, but if you're able to give, any amount helps. It helps us to continue making toys and bringing smiles throughout the world. One box is about $200, but anything helps! Pay for all, part, more than your share to help someone else out, or not at all.
Thank you for your service
